What's trending right now? It's a new challenge video isn't it? Or a song where you can't understand half of what the artist is saying? I know, it's a five second video, that's what it is. Wait no, it was a song written by that guy who posts the five second video. I never really saw him much of a musician, I'm so glad there's auto tune. Wait no- I'm not. If there was no auto-tune, then he wouldn't have the record deal. He would have never stolen the opportunity from the girl who's been posting videos of her songs online and never getting noticed. May I add she's had the channel for three years?
I've been thinking a lot about originality lately. I guess it was about four months ago when I decided that originality beats repetition. I don't know what hit me, it was like two years of watching who I thought were the best creators in the entire universe vanished and I saw right under the sameness and patterns they were following. Start the month with a Q&A, then a vlog, then a challenge, sometimes something unexpected or new, and ending the month with a favorites video. It was a cycle of that all year. I watched these people religiously for so long. Now I know how much time I've wasted being a 'fangirl,' will you, over these people or 'creators.'
I say 'creators' because is that really a good title for them?
a person or thing that brings something into existence
OK, well that's what they did, make things, bring them into existence. But is it original...no. Is what they make already existing...technically no. So say what you will, I'll stick with 'creator.'
Look, originality is hard, really, really difficult. And I get that, it's what I haven't posted anything on here in a month. But I'm sick of these 'creators' getting all of the credit for creating and making. Sure it may be funny, or make you happy after a long day, but there are other ways to do that other than the same repetitive content being spewed out onto the internet.
Would you rather spend fifteen minutes watching a video you've seen before on six different channels, or a brand new, creative, thought out, one-of-a-kind, skit that will take up five minutes of your time?
Would you rather listen to a song written to make more money and please an audience gained over one viral video or a beautiful song, complete with harmonies that will make you smile from ear to ear because it was written from the bottom of someone's heart?
Going back to the beginning. What should be trending or at least getting more recognition is the pieces of art on the internet. Whether it be music, films, poetry, stories, spoken word, and even other people's thoughts and ideas. We need to spread the creative, original content being pushed to the bottom of the popularity scale.
But it comes down to you and your preferences. I mean I definitely preferred the forty minute vlogs following someone around just to pretend I was really hanging out with them. But now I rather spend that time watching a twenty minute short film provoking curiosity and getting me thinking about what I could make and how I would make it.
Let's talk, what are your opinions on the topic of creators and 'creators.' I'd love to hear in the comments below.
a bit of a disclaimer, these are only my opinions, i'm not trying to offend you or your favorite creators whoever they may be.
